The Rev. F. Richard Garland, retired United Methodist pastor and hymn writer, composed this text when prompted by the sermon of the Rev. Dr. William H. Wilson, Director of Connectional Ministries and Assistant to the Bishop of the West Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of St. John's United Methodist Church, Rand, West Virginia. During the sermon Dr. Wilson commented on the Emmaus Road story, saying: "If you don't reach out to the stranger, you will miss Jesus. At Emmaus the stranger becomes the host!"
