Growing in the New Creation

When the Spirit Moves

Third Sunday after Pentecost, Year B

Worship this week is about growing into the new creation that we are called to be in Christ. So, think about talking about growing. Those who are raising kids find themselves telling stories about the latest thing, the latest mischief, the latest accomplishment that their child has gotten into. We need stories to help us see what living as a disciple is like. We tell our stories, and we tell stories of others as examples of a faithful life.

In the notes for the “When the Spirit Moves” worship series (May 23-June 27), the writer states, “When the Spirit moves amazing things happen. But they happen through the people who allow that Spirit to motivate them, to guide and direct them, to empower them for the work of making disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”

As you plan the worship music for these first five weeks of Pentecost, keep in mind how music can aid in the movement of the Spirit. As you plan worship, take time to submit to the Spirit, listen, discern, and then gather to be communities of faith that are ready to go when the Spirit moves.

The third Sunday after Pentecost focuses on growing into a new creation, and the songs center here on faith. “We Walk by Faith,” 2196 TFWS, and “Pues si Vivimos,” 356 UMH, work well as centering songs and as a response to the Word. “This is a Day of New Beginnings,” 383 UMH, is a great opening song; you may want to pair it with “Hymn of Promise,” 707 UMH, as a closing song. For a modern selection, consider “Oceans.”
