The Path of the Disciple: The Weight of the Call

Second Sunday after Pentecost, Year A

This week, we focus on the starting point, hearing and responding to the call. Even when it scares us, or challenges us, or asks a lot of us.

The “Open Our Eyes” Worship Series begins with Trinity Sunday. The following weeks then center on the senses of sight, sound, and touch. This series also touches on the theme of discipleship and #SeeAllThePeople, as the scripture on the Great Commission is one of the primary texts.

Upon seeing the title for this series, most of us think of the well-known hymn by Clara Scott, “Open My Eyes, That I May See,” written in 1895. This hymn does work well as a running theme for the last three weeks. You might consider using a verse each week as the centering song or prayer for illumination before the scripture and sermon. It also works well as a response to the sermon. For the first week that centers on the Trinity, consider making your own medley as the opening hymn. Here’s a suggestion; feel free to make it fit your context.

  • St. 1 “Holy, Holy, Holy,” United Methodist Hymnal, 64 (vs. 1)
  • St. 2 “Santo, Santo, Santo,” The Faith We Sing, 2007
  • St. 3 “We Are Standing on Holy Ground,” The Faith We Sing, 2272
  • St. 4 “Holy, Holy, Holy,” United Methodist Hymnal, 64 (vs. 4)

If you are looking for an anthem, you might consider a hymn anthem such as the medley discussed or the following anthem that uses a sacred and secular text side by side.
