Sample Covenant Preambles

  • Having been called by Jesus Christ to be disciples, with awe and trembling hearts, we answer his call to be Doorkeepers. This group shall exist for the purpose of support, communal prayer, receiving the Word and watching over one another in love so that all are encouraged to work out their salvation and offer others Christ.

  • Christian disciples need a firm foundation of faith. Paul urges the church at Ephesus to "grow up in every way into Christ" so that they may no longer be children "tossed to and fro and carried about by every wind of doctrine" (Eph. 4:13‑15). To that end, that we may grow towards maturity of faith and celebrate God's presence with us and the gifts God has given us to use for the furthering of the Kingdom, we expect of all who join us:...

  • In gratitude for the grace of Jesus Christ, in whose death we have died and in whose resurrection we have found new life, we pledge to be his disciples. We recognize that our time and talents are gifts from God, and we will use them to search out God's will for us and to obey it.

  • We will do our best not to compromise the will of God for human goals. We will serve both God and God's creation earnestly and lovingly. We respect and accept fully all group members, whose integrity and confidentiality we will uphold in all that we share. With God's grace and their help we covenant to:...

  • Called into being and empowered by the grace of God, we covenant to dedicate ourselves to a life that exemplifies Christ and the gospel. We offer our time, talents, abilities and resources, in obedience to the gospel, acknowledging our dependence upon God's grace and the power of the Holy Spirit.

  • Knowing that Jesus Christ died for me and that God calls me to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, I desire to practice the following disciplines in order that I might know God's love, forgiveness, guidance, and strength. I desire to make God's will my own and to be obedient to it. I desire to remain in Christ with the help of this covenant so that I might bear fruit for the kingdom of God.

  • To be a Christian disciple means sharing in Christ's ongoing work of salvation in the world. The task of discipleship therefore calls for the binding together of those with like mind and purpose, to watch over one another in love. We covenant together to be present each week. We will open and close our meetings with prayer, to help focus our minds and hearts on God rather than on ourselves and our accomplishments. We will approach each other with honesty and in a spirit of love. Understanding that our purpose is not to judge each other, we will hopefully feel free to speak honestly ‑‑ both in terms of our keeping with the covenant as well as our failure to do so.
