Index of Traditional and Gospel Hymns and Songs in The Faith We Sing
The following two tables contain listings of the traditional and the historical gospel hymns and songs in The Faith We Sing, including newly composed modern hymns in the classical, traditional style. While there are numerous characteristics of both genres of congregational song, the following characteristics are among the most commonly used. It should be noted that the most contemporary of the genre of contemporary black or white gospel music are not included in this listing of gospel hymns and songs. This special genre is distinctly different because of the great influence of jazz, ragtime, blues, and the considerable influence of contemporary, secular popular forms of the entertainment and recording industries. Both indexes here attempt to exclude contemporary praise and worship music, choruses, Taizé refrains, spirituals, global and ethnic music, and Scripture songs.
Traditional Hymns and Songs: 108 titles
- Form may include strophic or free poetry, rhymed or unrhymed.
- Simple harmonic structure, using primary chords, but there is also a more frequent use of dissonance and harmonic surprise in recent hymns.
- Mostly diatonic melodies, with more use of dissonant melody notes and wider leaps in recent years.
- Predominantly homophonic rhythm.
- Lack of syncopation; more syncopation recently
- Texts are more objective than subjective, using themes of the nature of God, the Trinity, the church, and the social gospel.
