Much has been made of the inclusiveness of the 1989 United Methodist Hymnal, with its multiethnic, multicultural, multilingual contents and its broad range of musical and hymnic styles. It is certainly true that it is the most inclusive of Methodist and United Methodist hymnals.
This index assigns each entry in the body of hymns (numbers 57-734) to a category according to musical style, ethnic origin, or language. The main ethnic groups include Euro-American, Hispanic-Latino-Spanish, African American, African, Native American, Asian, and other. The Euro-American category is arrived at by grouping together Psalms, chorales, gospel songs, folk hymns, Wesley hymns, contemporary praise and worship, and short choruses. A very few titles have been allowed to appear in two categories because they equally share characteristics of both categories. The assignment was accomplished by doing a page-by-page analysis of the hymnal's contents.
