Hail Hannah, Full Of Patience

1 Samuel 1:1-28; 2:1-11, 18-21
Recommended Tune: Nyland 76.76 D, Finnish folk melody

Hail Hannah, full of patience
devoted, favored one.
She as the barren first wife
by second wife was shunned.
Each year the trip to Shiloh
brought her a new defeat;
because she failed her husband
she wept and would not eat.

At last she prayed in silence,
and vowed in Eli's sight
to give the Lord her male child,
till death, a Nazirite.
She answered Eli's questions,
and cried out to be blessed.
Then Eli said to Hannah:
"May God grant your request."

Then God remembered Hannah.
Her prayer was not ignored.
She bore the son long hoped for,
and pledged him to the Lord.
She brought him to the temple
with proper sacrifice,
offering to God her first born,
a gift beyond all price.

Sing praise for her son, Samuel,
a prophet who did seek
to mediate God's power
when Israel's time was bleak.
Sing praise for mother Hannah,
whom we can honor now
by having faith and courage
as we fulfill our vow.
