Worship Matters: Episode 49 – Decentering Power in the Chancel

By Derek Weber

A Conversation with the Rev. John Thornburg

Director of Learning at the Texas Methodist Foundation and a frequent guest on Worship Matters, John Thornburg shares with Dr. Derek Weber, Director of Preaching Ministries, what it means to decenter power in worship. How can the preacher and worship leader make sure that other voices are heard, and other wisdom is shared during an act of worship which comes from all the people? How can the “variety of gifts” be utilized as a regular practice in worship? In this time of rethinking how we do church, questions of power and access become crucial.

“Worship Matters” is a podcast from the worship team of Discipleship Ministries, designed to deal with the intricacies of planning worship each week. Hosted by Dr. Cynthia Wilson, Executive Director of Worship Ministries and the Director of Liturgical Ministries; Dr. Diana Sanchez-Bushong, Director of Music Ministries; and Dr. Derek Weber, Director of Preaching Ministries, this podcast explores how to plan worship using the common lectionary while creating worship experiences and series that are engaging, relevant, and adaptable for any church setting.

Rev. Dr. Derek Weber, Director of Preaching Ministries, served churches in Indiana and Arkansas and the British Methodist Church. His PhD is from University of Edinburgh in preaching and media. He has taught preaching in seminary and conference settings for more than 20 years.
