The Future Present: Fresh Expressions United Methodist (FXUM)
By Michael Beck

Our friends in the United Kingdom are from our future! I don’t mean just five hours ahead of us in time zone, but also decades ahead of us in the erosion of Christendom, secularization, and the decline of regular church participation. Yet, alongside a declining inherited church, fresh expressions of church are springing up from the ground and giving life back to traditional congregations. We call this a “blended ecology” of church.
Are you ready for a report from the future?
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from Rev. Andrew Vertigan. Andrew has, for the last thirty-plus years, found himself exploring the edge of what church needs to be as a Salvation Army officer. He has a real passion to see his tribe live out its pioneering call to the margins. He longs to see the church realize that we are simply called to love “The Whosoever.” Andrew imagines that there will be many surprises in heaven, and he desires that we recognize and live alongside the surprising demonstrations of God’s grace here and now.
Along with his wife and fellow officer, Andrea, his entire ministry has been around church planting and innovating new expressions of church. For the last seven years, they have led pioneering ministries within the United Kingdom Salvation Army as well as sitting on the Fresh Expressions Board. Andrew has also taught Nazarene Theological College and Cliff College sessions on pioneering and coaching of pioneers. His other major passion is Rugby Union, where he refereed at a national level (top 12 in England), and he still mentors elite referees today.
His session will focus on living in “The Future Present.” It involves understanding what we believe the future will look like and how we embody that belief in our everyday living today.
