Heritage Sunday 2023 Worship Resources
By Lisa Hancock
On Heritage Sunday, United Methodists honor their past and envision their future. The timing of Heritage Sunday is linked to John Wesley’s Aldersgate experience on May 24, 1738, when he felt his heart “strangely warmed” and experienced assurance of his salvation. Traditionally celebrated on the third Sunday in May, this year Heritage Sunday is observed on May 21.
The General Commission on Archives and History, in partnership with Discipleship Ministries, has created resources for church leaders to use on this special Sunday, including Scripture recommendations, sermon notes, liturgy, and hymn suggestions.
Dr. Lisa Hancock, Director of Worship Arts Ministries, served as an organist and music minister in United Methodist congregations in the Northwest Texas and North Texas Annual Conferences, as well as the New Day Amani/Upendo house churches in Dallas. After receiving her Master of Sacred Music and Master of Theological Studies from Perkins School of Theology, Lisa earned her PhD in Religious Studies from Southern Methodist University wherein she researched and wrote on the doctrine of Christ, disability, and atonement.
