My name is Andrea Sanabria, and I am from Guatemala. I came to Chicago (as have many other immigrant families) in 1999 with my eleven-month-old daughter. That same year, my uncle invited me to Humboldt Park United Methodist Church for a special New Year's worship service. After that, I attended church sporadically, just as an observer. Another church leader, Elvira Ramírez, invited me to the Northern Illinois Conference Latina Women's Retreat. It was that retreat’s twenty-fifth-anniversary celebration. In this sacred time of retreat, I converted to Christ. For me, it was a change full of grace and love. I started to be more active at Humboldt Park United Methodist Church. I joined the Women's Retreat Committee to plan and guide the annual retreat and other events for Latina women and their spiritual growth.
My local Humboldt Park United Methodist Church began a Women to Women (Mujeres a Mujeres) ministry in 2003. It was started at a time when our church was offering shelter and food to single men and also to women with children. Our church saw the need for the women who we were serving to receive emotional and spiritual support and have access to professional counseling and mental health resources. United Methodist Deacon Barbarita Greicar began that ministry, which touched my life because I had to divorce the father of my two youngest daughters. Like everyone, I have gone through other struggles. Barbarita took the time to train and form another sister of the church, Floridalma Rivera, to lead the Women to Women ministry. And Floria took the time to train and educate me. I have been the leader of Women to Women since 2018. Through the ministry of Women to Women, we offer the community free and professional counseling with a bilingual and licensed counselor. (We pay her $60 per case with funds raised and grants.) This counseling is open to anyone, regardless of their immigration status or whether they have insurance. The counseling may be for one person, a couple, a mother with her children, or any other family configuration. It is completely confidential and open to anyone in the community or church. My role is to organize appointments, help the counselor obtain information about cases, educate the community about this free resource, and remind people that we can have a therapist and Jesus (and we should not struggle alone with emotional or mental health). Through Women to Women, we offer a support group for survivors of domestic violence (or women struggling to escape domestic violence). It is a time to listen and be heard and remember that we are never alone.
We also organize workshops focused on the questions and needs of Latina women. Workshop topics include learning how to detect cyberbullying or bullying, how to eat healthier and prevent diabetes, resources that exist in the community for undocumented women, and more. Sometimes we do art projects together, paint our nails, and just take care of ourselves. Lastly, the pastor and I are available to accompany women to obtain an order of protection or to go to court. Since we work primarily with Latinas, we also connect with Northern Illinois JFON (Justice for Our Neighbors) and other immigration resources to ensure our community has translation and moral support when they have to go to USCIS (United States Citizen and Immigration Services). It has been an honor to have this leadership position in the community and in the church as the coordinator of Mujeres a Mujeres. It is not an easy ministry. but it is possible with the help of God and the power of the Holy Spirit.
I have also had the honor of participating in other committees of my local church and the annual conference. It is always a joy to serve God and the community. Being part of Humboldt Park UMC has been important for me because my three beautiful daughters are following in my footsteps. My family has seen how I have changed and grown, which is only possible through the Holy Spirit. I was afraid to speak in public before, but through my church, I have had the opportunity to speak at protests/actions for God's justice AND preach for the first time at a worship service this past Good Friday. Now, I am not afraid to spread my voice and be God's instrument for social and personal holiness!
This past year, I had the opportunity to represent our church and our Women to Women ministry in a leadership fellowship with a community group in our neighborhood called Palenque LSNA. I learned many things about the roots of racism and xenophobia in this country and the impact it has on the community. At the same time, I learned about even more resources that can support our community and opportunities to serve and volunteer as we work together for the kingdom of God. It is my hope to continue growing in faith, and I know that I can achieve this only by being active in the church, working for peace and shining the light of Jesus. To God be the honor and glory!
Andrea Sanabria and her three daughters are active members of the Humboldt Park UMC in Chicago and are all proud Chapinas (Guatemalan Women). She leads a Mujeres a Mujeres anti-domestic violence ministry at the church and also serves on the Northern Illinois Conference Latina Women's Retreat committee. Mi nombre es Andrea Sanabria, y soy de Guatemala. Vine en el año 1999 a Chicago, con mi niña de 11 meses, como muchas personas inmigrantes. Ese mismo año, mi tío me invitó a la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Humboldt Park para el Culto Especial de Año Nuevo. Después de esto, asitía a la iglesia de vez en cuando. Luego, una líder de la iglesia, Elvira Ramírez, me invitó al Retiro de Mujeres Latinas de la Conferencia de Illinois Norte. Fue cuando se cumplieron los 25 años del retiro en nuestra conferencia anual. En este tiempo sagrado del retiro, me convertí a Cristo. Para mí fue un cambio lleno de gracia y amor. He sido la líder del Ministerio Mujeres a Mujeres desde 2018. También, a través de Mujeres a Mujeres, ofrecemos un grupo de apoyo para sobrevivientes de la violencia doméstica (o de mujeres luchando para salir de la violencia doméstica). Es un tiempo para escuchar y ser escuchadas, y recordar que nunca estamos solas. Aparte de esto, organizamos talleres y charlas enfocados en las preguntas y necesidades de las mujeres latinas. Los temas pueden ser sobre aprender a cómo detectar el ciberacoso o el acoso contra sus hijos; cómo comer más saludable y prevenir la diabetes; cuáles son los recursos que existen en la comunidad para mujeres sin documentos, y mucho más. De vez en cuando, tomamos tiempo para hacer proyectos de arte juntas o pintarnos las uñas y cuidarnos.
Últimamente, nuestra pastora y yo estamos disponibles para acompañar a las mujeres a obtener una orden de protección, o tener a alguien con ellas si tienen que acudir a la corte. Dado que trabajamos principalmente con latinas, también nos conectamos con Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos (JFON, por sus siglas en inglés) del Norte de Illinois y otros recursos de inmigración, y nos aseguramos de que nuestra comunidad tenga servicio de interpretación y apoyo moral cuando acuden al Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés). Para mí ha sido un honor inmenso tener este puesto de liderazgo en la comunidad y en la iglesia. No es un ministerio fácil, pero es posible con la ayuda de Dios y el poder del Espíritu Santo.
Yo he tenido la honra de participar en otros comités de mi iglesia local y de la conferencia. Siempre es un gozo servir a Dios y a su comunidad. Ser parte de la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Humboldt Park ha sido muy importante para mí, porque mis tres lindas hijas siguen mis pasos, y mi familia ha visto cómo he cambiado y crecido. Yo sé que esto ha sido posible solamente por el Espíritu Santo. Antes, tenía miedo de hablar en público, y a través de mi iglesia, he tenido la oportunidad de hablar en protestas a favor de la justicia de Dios Y predicar por primera vez en un culto de adoración durante el Viernes Santo pasado. Ahora no tengo miedo de hacer sentir mi voz y ser instrumento de Dios para la santidad social y personal.
Este año pasado, tuve la oportunidad de representar a nuestra iglesia y al Ministerio de Mujeres a Mujeres, a través de una beca de liderazgo, en un grupo comunitario en nuestro barrio, que se llama Palenque LSNA (https://www.palenquelsna.org/about). Aprendí muchas cosas sobre las raíces del racismo y la xenofobia en este país, y el impacto que tiene en la comunidad. A la misma vez, aprendí mucho más sobre los recursos que hay disponibles para apoyar a nuestra comunidad, y las oportunidades de servicio y voluntariado mientras trabajemos juntos para el reino de Dios.
Me gustaría seguir creciendo en mi fe y, sé que solo puedo conseguirlo estando en la iglesia para trabajar por la paz y brillar en la luz de Jesús. ¡A Dios sea la honra y gloria!
