Small Groups

Fellowship — Snacks or a Meal (10 minutes with snacks; longer, obviously, if there is a meal).

Gathering Time (5-10 minutes) In pairs or small groups, consider the dynamics behind doubt and certainty. (It’s entirely possible to be certain, and be wrong, you know.) How difficult (or not) is it for you to deal with ambiguity?

Group Dialogue (Approximately 30 minutes) Read  John 14:1-14.

• We tend to think of this passage in the context of funerals, but it really is missional in its intent. Ask participants to outline the steps in this conversation to better see where it leads. (vv. 1, assurance; vv. 2-3, promise of continuing guidance and protection; vv. 6-7, confirmation of God’s intended pathway; vv. 8-11, clarification of Jesus’ testimony and “proofs”; vv. 12-14, marching orders)
   
• Think about the process in your congregation for disciple-making. What groups, classes, helps, resources, and mentors are in place to shepherd members through the process of being assured of God, finding a safe place to learn and grow, direction for and assessment of gifts for ministry, and opportunities to use those gifts for the church and community? What role do you play in cultivating ministry, either to use your gifts or to nurture the gifts of others? If the church does not have such opportunities in place, what might you do?
   
• The promise of Jesus in verse 12 is extravagant and extraordinary, but it must be possible if he has promised it. What does it mean that we are intended to “do greater works than I (Jesus) do because I (Jesus) go to the Father”? Consider that this is addressed not only to individuals, but to the group of disciples.
   
• The next claim is also amazing: “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified” (v 13). Note that this is a qualified statement; twice. What is asked must be in Jesus’ name and must glorify God. What does it mean to ask for something in this way? What sort of requests do you think would be acceptable? Unacceptable? Why?

Prayer (10 minutes). Share prayer requests and respond appropriately.

Sending Forth (2 minutes). End with the following prayer, a similar prayer, or the Lord’s Prayer:

Magnificent God, maker of extravagant promises and giver of amazing gifts, we thank you for the ways you lead us into your pathways and empower us to use our abilities for your kingdom. Inspire and embolden us for ministry in your name; gladden our spirits as we live out your mission. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
