The Fast We Choose

Learning to Live Inside Out

Ash Wednesday, Year A

Ash Wednesday is an inside-out act of worship. We come and confess and are reminded of both our sinfulness and our mortality. And yet we are given a visible mark in the imposition of ashes, a way of letting the world know that we are people of faith.

Holy God of compassion and mercy, help us enter this holy season with the hearts you desire and with the sacrifices that please you – more than our letting go of bad habits. As we bring our tithes and offerings, may they be dedicated to the work of compassion. Help us take on what brings you joy: sharing with the hungry and offering shelter and clothing to the homeless poor. In doing so, may light arise in the darkness. In Christ, we pray. Amen. (Isaiah 58:1-12)
