God Knows My Name

I Will Call Upon the Lord

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Year C

Seen. Heard. Known. However you put it, we humans long for relationships where we trust others to care about who we are, what we feel, and how we experience the world.

Theme for the series:

“God [made] me. God [knows] me. God [stays with] me. God [will always help] me.”

Each week will reveal a different fill-in-the-blank. Create a poster-sized board with the words, “God _______ me.” Each week, you and the children will determine what word fills in the blank. You could use a dry-erase board and wipe it clean each week, and reinforce the previous week’s learning. Or you could bring a different poster-sized board with the words written on it. Find a creative way to reveal the fill-in-the-blank word each week throughout this series.

Psalm 139:13-14, New International Reader's Version

13 You created the deepest parts of my being.
You put me together inside my mother’s body.
14 How you made me is amazing and wonderful.
I praise you for that.
What you have done is wonderful.
I know that very well.

Fill in the blank:

God ____ me. (Missing word: made)

Objects:

A small treasure box with objects the children will recognize; a mirror.

Message:

Good morning, everyone! I’m so glad you’re here today. I have a mystery word we’re going to figure out together. It’s something very special that God did for you and me. I’m going to give you a hint. Listen closely:

“You made me in my mother’s body. You put me together perfectly.” – Psalm 139:13, NIRV

(Show the sign/board that says: “God ____ me.”) Can you guess what word belongs in the blank? God what? (Allow children to respond.) Yes! The word is made. Can you say it with me? God made me! Let me put the word made in the blank on our sign.

Did you know that before you were born and before you took your first breath, God already knew you and loved you? God made you carefully and wonderfully.

What are some things you think God made? (Hold up a small treasure box with items inside.) In this box are a few things God made. Let’s see what’s in here. (Pull out each object or picture one at a time and let the kids guess. Items could include those listed below.)

  • A flower or a picture of a flower
  • A toy animal
  • A leaf
  • A small mirror [Keep this as the final item.]

(Hold up the mirror.) Now, this is very special. Can anyone tell me what I see in this mirror? (Allow children to answer.). Yes! I see me! And when you look in a mirror, guess who you see?

(Let the children answer: “Me!”) That’s right! The person God made so wonderfully is you.

Out of everything God made, the Bible says you are wonderfully made. You are carefully and wonderfully made. It was not by accident, not by mistake. God made you on purpose.

In The United Methodist Church, we believe that God loves every person from the very beginning. That’s called prevenient grace. Can you say "pre-ven-i-ent grace"? That’s a big word, so let’s say it slowly. (Allow children to answer slowly.) Grace is the kindness and love that God gives to all people. Prevenient grace means God's love is with you even before you know it. So, even when you were a little bitty baby or still in your mommy’s tummy, God already loved you and planned good things for your life. How awesome is that?

Let’s do a fun motion chant to help us remember today’s word. What was today’s word? (Allow children to say “made.”) Ready? Repeat what I do.

God made me, yes, it’s true! (Point to self.)
God made me, and God made you! (Point to others.)
Made with love, from head to toe. (Touch head, then touch toes.)
God made me wonderfully, this I know! (Thumbs up.)

Prayer:

Loving God, maker of all things, thank you for making me. You made me with love. You made me special. Help me remember that you have always had a plan for me and that you loved me before anyone else loved me. I love you, God. Amen.

Between the Sundays: Family Conversation Starters

Designed to reinforce the children’s message throughout the week.

We’ve created these conversation starters and activity ideas to help spark meaningful, faith-filled discussions at home. Each week, your child will come home with a phrase, “God ______ me.” Use the weekly word to guide your talks, drawings, and prayers—anytime and anywhere!

These moments will help nurture trust in God, encourage reflection, and grow faith across the whole family.

God Made Me

Big Reminder: God made me, and I am wonderfully created!

On a large piece of poster paper or butcher paper, do the following:

  • Draw a picture of yourself.
  • Fill in the blank: God _______ (made) me.
  • Draw some of the special things about you that make YOU... you!

Let’s Talk About It

What makes you special?

  • Who made you? (Let children respond, “God!”)
  • What’s your favorite thing God created?
  • Say a prayer of thanks for the ways God made each person in your family.
  • As a family, watch the video God Made Me by Slugs and Bugs. Come up with motions for the song.
