What is Good

Glory Revealed

Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany, Year A

At the center of worship today is…worship. Yes, that may sound redundant and even unhelpful, but bear with me. Micah 6:1-8 is about worship.

Note to the Teacher

This lesson focuses on the theme of "What Is Good," inspired by Micah 6:1-8, and encourages students to explore how justice, kindness, and humility can shape our actions and decisions. The icebreaker, “Kindness Bingo,” invites students to interact with one another by completing kindness challenges, sparking conversations about the everyday acts of justice and kindness they can practice. In the discussion, students will dive into the concept of how justice is demonstrated in various situations, discussing the importance of taking action and showing humility. For the activity, students participate in the “A Fair World” station exercise, where they explore various real-world scenarios and collaborate to determine the best approaches to address them with justice, kindness, and humility, followed by a group sharing of their ideas.

Times are based on a fifty-minute lesson period but may be adjusted.

Icebreaker: Kindness Bingo (10 minutes)

Create a Bingo board with simple kindness actions in each square (e.g., “Compliment someone,” “Tell someone something you admire about them,” “Give someone a high five,” “Give a smile to someone,” etc.). When they complete a kindness action, the student who received the kind act signs the Bingo square to cross it off. The first person to get a line or full Bingo can shout out “Kindness Bingo!” and share what actions they completed.

Bible Reading (5 minutes)

Read Micah 6:1-8.

Discussion Questions (10 minutes)

What Is Good

  • What three actions does God require in Micah 6:8? If you had to rank the three from easiest to most difficult, how would you rank them and why?
  • How does the Bible passage describe the relationship between justice and kindness? Do you see a connection between justice and kindness in today’s world?
  • What does “walking humbly with God” mean to you in your daily life? What do you think “walking humbly with God” meant to the people that this scripture was written for, thousands of years ago?
  • How does the teaching in Micah 6:8 relate to issues of inequality or injustice in our society today?
  • Let’s create a list of actions we could do as individuals or together that could reflect justice, kindness, and humility. For each of the actions, list which is the primary attribute practiced and any secondary attributes. Which would be easiest for you to practice in the next week? Can we choose one to do together? Let’s do the following activity together.

Active Learning Activity (20 minutes)

A Fair World

Set up different stations around the room with scenarios written on large pieces of paper. The scenarios should be a mixture that might include situations such as “A friend is being unfairly treated,” “There’s a community in need,” and “A classmate has no lunch.” Add a piece of paper underneath each scenario. Students will visit each station and add an idea of how justice, kindness, and humility could be demonstrated in those situations. Then, place students in pairs or small groups and have them revisit the stations to evaluate the different approaches and determine the most effective one. The approach could be one listed on the sheet of paper, a combination, or something new, inspired by the ideas. After students have discussed each scenario, ask them to share their ideas with the class.

Prayer (5 minutes)

Close with prayer or your group’s weekly blessing.
