Note to the Teacher
This lesson centers on the theme of "Living Out Justice, Kindness, and Humility," inspired by Isaiah 58:1-9, with a focus on active service and reflection. The icebreaker, "Where in the World," encourages students to talk about themselves in a creative way. The discussion focuses on how we can embody the values of justice, kindness, and humility in practical ways, examining personal responsibility and collective action. For the activity, students create a collage representing justice, kindness, and humility, using images and words to visually convey these values, followed by a reflective discussion on how they can apply these values to their lives.
Times are based on a fifty-minute lesson period but may be adjusted.
Icebreaker: Where in the World? (10 minutes)
Ask students to think about a place they’ve always wanted to visit or somewhere they feel connected to (it could be a city, country, landmark, or even a fictional place), or a fictional place they’d like to go. The more specific, the better! One at a time, the students will describe the place without making it easy to guess and without giving its name. Then, the rest of the group will try to guess whether the place is real or fictional. Once they guess, the student will reveal whether it’s real or fictional, the name, and why they have always wanted to go there.
Bible Reading (5 minutes)
Isaiah 58:1-9a (9b-12)
Discussion Questions (10 minutes)
Living Out Justice, Kindness, and Humility
- What does the writer describe in Isaiah 58:1-9 as the true act of worship?
- How does Isaiah 58:1-9a (9b-12) describe the relationship between justice and kindness? If you were here last week, how is that relationship similar or different from what we discussed in the Micah passage?
- In what ways can we live out the “fast” Isaiah speaks of in our daily lives?
- How does Isaiah’s message challenge the way we typically view worship and justice today? Do you think worship typically has anything to do with justice?
- What would excite you about putting Isaiah’s teachings into action in our world today? How do you think the world would be different?
Active Learning Activity (20 minutes)
Justice, Kindness, and Humility Collage
Ask the students to describe what justice and kindness look like in action and how they might visually represent those values.
Provide each student or group with a large sheet of poster paper and some art supplies (magazines to cut images from, scissors, glue, and markers).
Ask students to use images from magazines to create a collage that visually represents justice, kindness, and/or humility. They should look for images, words, or symbols that resonate with these values. For example, justice might be represented by an image of a courtroom or a peaceful protest; kindness could be represented by images of people helping others, and humility could be represented by someone listening or serving others.
Prayer (5 minutes)
Close with prayer or your group’s weekly blessing.
