Casting Your Cares

A Living Hope

Seventh Sunday of Easter, Year A

If you are one of those who believe that worship should leave you feeling lighter, unburdened, and set free, then this is the week for you. “Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7 NRSV).

The Chosen & Precious worship series centers on Christ and his final days on earth before ascending. These Sundays are also filled with celebration and praise as we continue to live into the Easter promise.

A hymn that can carry the theme of this series throughout all three weeks is “How Firm a Foundation," 529 in The United Methodist Hymnal. Click here for more information on "How Firm a Foundation."

Be creative in how you sing the hymn each week. Use it in a different place in the liturgy each week. You can also divide verses among different groups of people. Since this tune uses only five notes (pentatonic), you can have some singers drone on the tonic or primary note while others sing above. Another treatment is to have one of the verses sung in a round. Start with one group, and two measures later start the other group. The first group holds the final note of the verse, while the others catch up.

A couple of more modern songs are “Cornerstone” by Hillsong, and “In Christ Alone” by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty found in Worship & Song, 3105.

As you plan weeks two and three of this worship series, you may want to consider “Beams of Heaven as I Go,” 524, United Methodist Hymnal, and “Lord, Be Glorified,” 2150, The Faith We Sing. Click here for more information about “Beams of Heaven as I Go."
