By Seonwoong Hwang

A Thanksgiving Sunday Service
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
Set up a Thanksgiving table on the stage or on the steps leading up to the stage.
Invite church members in advance to bring fruits or vegetables as a tangible expression of their gratitude. Alternatively, they may bring an item that symbolizes something they are especially thankful for from the past year (e.g., a graduation cap, an empty medicine bottle, a toy car, a key, etc.).
If participants are invited to bring symbolic items, the church will also provide some fruits and vegetables to place on the table or stage steps alongside the items brought by the congregation.
WELCOME
Today we gather to celebrate Thanksgiving Sunday. May this be a worship service filled with praise and gratitude for every blessing God has given us. As we worship together, may we also look forward with hope and expectation to the blessings he has yet to provide and to the goodness he will continue to reveal in our lives.
*CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly.
People: We give thanks to God for his Word.
Leader: Teach and admonish one another with all wisdom.
People: We give thanks to God for the gifts of wisdom and instruction.
Leader: Sing to God with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.
People: We give thanks to God, who has put songs in our hearts and on our lips.
Leader: Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.
People: We give thanks to God for the gift of Jesus Christ.
All: We offer our thanksgiving and praise to the Lord, who is our everything.
*HYMN
“Great Is Thy Faithfulness”
United Methodist Hymnal 140
PRAYERS
Invite four individuals representing different generations or groups within the congregation to prepare brief prayers of thanksgiving in advance. These prayers may also be combined and presented in a video.
Child Representative: Dear God, thank you for loving us. Thank you for giving us parents who love us and a church where we belong. Help us to become children who grow more thankful every day.
Youth Representative: Lord, we thank you for the grace of the cross. We are grateful that you are always with us. Fill us with your perfect grace, and through today’s worship, restore hearts of gratitude within us.
Young Adult Representative: Sometimes we become so focused on our dreams and goals that we forget you, yet you alone give us breath and you alone sustain every step we take. Teach us to walk toward our goals with thankful hearts each day.
Adult Representative: Gracious God, thank you for faithfully leading us throughout this year. We confess the times we compared ourselves to others and allowed complaints to replace gratitude. As we offer you our sacrifice of thanksgiving, help us once again to encounter you as our faithful provider. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
SCRIPTURE READING
Luke 15:29, 31
SERMON
“Comparison: The Thief of Gratitude”
CORPORATE PRAYER
After the sermon, instrumental music begins quietly, naturally leading the congregation into a time of prayer. Invite the congregation to pray softly. Encourage them to repent of the times they have complained by comparing themselves with others and to pray with a commitment to become people who live with greater gratitude.
HYMN
“It Is Well with My Soul”
United Methodist Hymnal 377
OFFERING TALK
Consider designating a portion of the Thanksgiving offering for a mission field or a ministry serving the local community. Announce this in advance so that the congregation may prepare to give generously.
As we present our Thanksgiving offering, we joyfully dedicate $1,000 out of today’s gifts to support ministries serving the refugees in our community (an example). We trust that the Lord will receive these offerings with delight and use them to expand his kingdom.
OFFERTORY PRAYER
Lord, we desire to glorify you by offering a sacrifice of thanksgiving. We confess that everything we have comes from you and that you alone are our faithful provider. Receive these offerings and use them to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. May they become instruments of hope and restoration for those who are poor, vulnerable, and forgotten. Fill those who offer these gifts with even greater gratitude, that their lives may continually overflow with thanksgiving. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
*SENDING HYMN
“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”
United Methodist Hymnal384
*BENEDICTION
May the saving grace and faithful guidance of our Lord go with you wherever you go. Live each day enjoying the abundance of God’s blessings and be God’s people who bring his blessing to the world around you.
And now, may the grace and love of the Triune God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be with you, now and forever. Amen.
