PRELUDE
Instrumental music or organ piece such as: “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” or other appropriate music.
WELCOME
Beloved friends in Christ,
Welcome to worship on this special day in the life of the United Methodist Church – Aldersgate Day. Today we remember and celebrate the profound spiritual awakening of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. On May 24, 1738, Wesley felt his heart “strangely warmed,” and he knew with deep assurance that God’s grace was for him personally. That moment not only transformed his life but sparked a movement of renewal that continues to shape our faith and witness today. Whether your heart is already burning with joy or you come today in search of assurance, grace, and hope, know that you are welcome here. You are part of this community, drawn together by the Spirit, to worship the living God, to remember our roots, and to renew our commitment to God’s mission in the world. May this time together open our hearts again to God’s amazing love and rekindle in us the fire of faith. Let us worship God with joy and thanksgiving!
CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Come, people of God, with hearts open to the Spirit.
People: We gather as John Wesley once did, longing to feel God’s love anew.
Leader: In moments of doubt or dryness, God speaks grace and assurance.
People: Our hearts are strangely warmed! We come to remember, to celebrate, and to be renewed.

People: Come, Holy Spirit! Kindle the fire of love within us again.
HYMN

OPENING PRAYER
Gracious God, We gather today in gratitude for the life and witness of John Wesley. We remember his struggle, his seeking, and his moment of assurance—when his heart was strangely warmed by your grace. As we worship, warm our hearts again. Kindle in us a renewed love for you, a deeper hunger for holiness, and a bold spirit for mission. May we, like Wesley, be set on fire with your love and sent forth in your name. Through Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

LITANY OF RENEWAL AND GRACE
Leader: God of every seeking heart, we remember how you warmed John Wesley’s heart and called him to new life.
People: Warm our hearts again, O Lord. Set us free from cold faith and empty habits.
Leader: You poured your love into Wesley’s heart by the Holy Spirit. You gave him boldness to preach grace to all.
People: Pour your Spirit upon us now. Make us bold to share good news in word and deed.
Leader: You stirred a wave of holiness, mercy, and justice that changed the world.
People: Stir our hearts too. Revive our church.
Leader: Make us disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
All: Come, Holy Spirit. Warm our hearts. Guide our steps. Renew our faith. Amen.
GRACE WALK STATIONS (optional)
Set up three or four short prayer/reflection stations around the sanctuary, each focused on a different aspect of grace: prevenient (God goes before), justifying (God forgives), sanctifying (God transforms). At each station, include a scripture, a short prayer, and a simple physical response (writing, lighting a candle, placing a stone, touching water, etc.). Have an accompanist or musician play or sing songs related to the theme of grace (preferably Charles Wesley’s hymns).
PASTORAL PRAYER
Holy and loving God, We give thanks today for the faith of John Wesley and all who have come before us—those whose hearts burned with love for you and whose lives became instruments of your grace. We thank you that faith is not just something we think, but something we feel, something that moves our souls and sends us into the world. Stir within us a hunger for your presence. For those who feel far from you, bring assurance. For those who are weary, bring rest. For those who are seeking, bring light. Renew your church with courage and clarity. Make us people who live what we believe. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray:
LORD’S PRAYER
OFFERING
Just as John Wesley devoted his life to Christ after Aldersgate, we, too, are invited to give ourselves in love and service through our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness.
ANTHEM DURING OFFERING
PRAYER OF DEDICATION (Unison)
God of grace, You gave John Wesley a heart on fire. Light our hearts on fire for your kingdom. Receive these gifts and use them to fan the flames of faith, justice, and compassion in our community and beyond. May they warm hearts, feed souls, and transform lives. In Christ’s name. Amen.
HYMN
“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” (United Methodist Hymnal, 384)
BENEDICTION
Go forth with hearts open to grace. May you feel Christ’s presence walking with you, the Spirit stirring in you, and the love of God embracing you. Let your hearts be strangely warmed and your lives boldly lived. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
† The following passage is an excerpt from Wesley’s journal, where he records his experience of conversion. This can be added to the introduction of the worship service, included in the sermon, or printed in the program.
“In the evening, I went very unwillingly to a Society in Aldersgate-Street, where one was reading Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ; Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me, that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.” (Wesley’s Journal, May 24, 1738)
