세계성찬주일 설교문 Sermon for World Communion Sunday

오늘 우리는 세계성찬주일을 맞아 이 거룩한 식탁 앞에 모였습니다. 지금, 다른 대륙, 다른 시간대, 다른 언어를 사용하는 수많은 이들이 각자의 교회에서 거룩한 식탁에 참여하며 주님의 이름을 부르고 있습니다. 세계 곳곳, 동서남북에서 울려 퍼지는 성찬의 찬미가, 그 자체로 이 세상의 분열을 가로지르며 하나 되게 하는 증언이 되리라 믿습니다.

Today, we gather at this Holy Table to celebrate World Communion Sunday. At this moment, countless believers across different continents, time zones, and languages are also joining in this sacred meal, lifting up the name of the Lord in their places of worship. The song of Communion that rises from the east and west, north and south, becomes a testimony that transcends division and calls us into unity.

거룩한 식탁은 단순히 빵과 포도주를 나누는 자리일까요? 아닙니다. 성찬은 삶의 가장 깊은 진실이 드러나는 자리입니다. 서로 다른 시간과 공간을 살아온 이들이 한자리에 앉아 같은 빵을 떼고 같은 잔을 마시는 그 순간, 우리는 더 이상 낯선 이들이 아닙니다. 언어가 다르고 피부색이 달라도, 우리가 들고 있는 그 빵과 잔 위에 하나의 은총이 흐르고 있습니다.

Is this sacred table merely a place for sharing bread and wine? By no means. Communion is the place where the deepest truth of life is revealed. When people who have lived in different times and places sit at one table, break the same bread, and share the same cup, we are no longer strangers. Though our languages differ and our skin colors are not the same, one grace flows through the bread and cup we hold together.

사도 바울은 말합니다. “우리가 떼는 떡은 그리스도의 몸에 참여하는 것이 아니며, 우리가 나누는 잔은 그리스도의 피에 참여하는 것이 아니냐.” 바울은 성찬을 단지 상징이나 기억의 수단으로 보지 않았습니다. 그는 성찬이야말로 그리스도의 고난과 생명에 실질적으로 참여하는 사건이라 믿었습니다. 떡을 떼는 순간, 우리는 주님의 부서짐 속으로 들어갑니다. 그리고 그 부서짐 안에서, 나의 상처도, 당신의 고통도, 세상의 갈라짐도 비로소 다시 이어질 수 있는 가능성을 얻습니다.

The apostle Paul declares, “Is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? And is not the cup that we bless a participation in the blood of Christ?” Paul did not see the Lord’s Supper as merely symbolic or commemorative. For him, Communion was participation in the suffering and life of Christ. The moment we break the bread, we enter into the brokenness of our Lord. And within that brokenness, our wounds, our sorrows, and the ruptures of this world begin to find the possibility of healing and reconnection.

우리는 누구나 할 것 없이 부서진 존재들입니다. 삶에 대한 실망, 관계의 실패, 사회의 불의, 전쟁과 폭력 앞에서 때로는 무력하게 주저앉기도 합니다. 그러나 오늘 이 성찬의 자리에서 우리는 새로운 시선을 얻습니다. 그리스도께서 찢기신 몸을 통해, 우리가 모두 그 하나 된 몸에 참여하게 되었다는 사실을 깨닫게 되는 것입니다. 성찬은 회복의 약속입니다. 부서짐이 끝이 아니라는 선언입니다.

We are, each of us, broken beings. Disappointment with life, failed relationships, injustice in society, and the violence of war often leave us overwhelmed and helpless. Yet at this Table, we are given new eyes. Through Christ’s broken body, we come to realize that we have been invited to participate in his wholeness. The Eucharist is a promise of restoration, a declaration that brokenness is not the end.

이 거룩한 식탁은 우리를 하나로 부르십니다. 기억하십시오. 주님의 몸은 한 덩어리의 떡이었습니다. 그것이 찢겨 우리 모두에게 나뉘었습니다. 우리는 각각 다른 조각이지만, 그 출처는 하나입니다. 주님의 손에서 찢긴 그 떡 한 조각에 담긴 사랑이, 우리를 다시 서로에게 이어 줍니다.

This Sacred Table calls us into oneness. Remember: the body of our Lord was one loaf. It was torn and shared with us all. We may be many fragments, but our source is one. The love contained in that single piece of bread, torn by the hands of the Lord, binds us again to one another.

세계성찬주일에 다시 한번 묻습니다. 우리는 이 떡을 어떻게 기억하고 있습니까? 그저 종교적 의무로 행해지는 예식으로 남겨두겠습니까? 아니면 이 식탁에서 받은 은총을 세상 속에서 실천하겠습니까? 여기서 나눈 빵이, 고통받는 자와의 연대가 되고, 갈라진 이웃과 화해가 되고, 억눌린 자를 위한 정의가 되어야 하지 않겠습니까?

So on this World Communion Sunday, we ask again: “How do we remember this bread?
Will we leave it as a ritual obligation, or will we live out the grace we receive at this Table in the world? Should not the bread we share become solidarity with the suffering, reconciliation with the divided, and justice for the oppressed?”

이 거룩한 식탁에서 우리는 평화를 배웁니다. 서로를 향해 손을 내미는 법을 배웁니다. 그리고 무엇보다, 하나님께서 지금도 이 세계를 향해 자신의 몸을 찢어 나누시는 분이라는 사실을 기억합니다. 주님의 식탁에 참여한다는 것은, 바로 그 삶을 따르겠다는 다짐입니다.

At this table, we learn peace. We learn how to reach out to one another. Most of all, we remember that God is the one who still breaks and offers his body for the healing of the world. To partake in the Lord’s Table is to make a pledge to follow that life.

그러니 이제 자리에서 일어나 다시 세상으로 나아갑시다. 우리 삶의 자리, 우리의 가정, 일터, 사회 곳곳에서 이 떡을 기억하며 살아갑시다. 찢긴 떡 위에 흐르는 하나 됨의 은총을 마음에 품고, 우리 또한 화해와 평화의 사람이 되어 이 세상을 걸어갑시다.

So now, let us rise and return to the world. In our homes, our workplaces, our communities—may we live with the memory of this bread. May we carry in our hearts the grace of unity that flows from the broken bread and become people of reconciliation and peace as we walk through this world.
