With Grateful Hearts For Maggie Kuhn
Recommended Tune: Ellacombe CMD, Gesangbuch der Hersogl (1784)
Harmony: William H. Monk, Hymns Ancient and Modern, Appendix (1868)
With gratitude for The Gray Panthers.
With grateful hearts for Maggie Kuhn
we sing our praise today.
With courage born of spirit power
she shunned tradition's way.
She used her wisdom and her wit
to forge a brave new path
for women and minorities
which brought out some men's wrath. She ran the distance of her course
obedient to her call.
She turned aside from pride of class,
and won the race for all.
Convinced that women's place should be
where they could serve the best,
she worked to help them persevere
to feel more self-possessed.She served the church, yet knew its flaws
and sought to help it grow
to give not refuge, but support,
to change the status quo.
She dared the church to live its faith,
to act for civil need.
Her passion was for Christ-like care.
Compassion was her creed.Come, live the dream of Maggie Kuhn
to make the world a place
where every one, both young and old,
receives God's freeing grace,
Let us now act for justice, peace,
not fearing to be spurned.
"Each day do one outrageous thing."
And "Leave no stone unturned!"
