Revere Now Leah, Steadfast One

Based on Genesis 29:9-13, 16-35; 30:1-8, 22-26; 35:9,10, 16-20
Recommended Tune: Kingsfold CMD, English traditional melody
Arranged: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1906)

Revere now Leah, steadfast one,
with lovely eyes and voice.
Though she loved Jacob ardently
she was his second choice.
Her father, Laban, cheated him,
for Rachel he must wait,
and Leah must with fortitude
endure her painful fate.

As she learned more of Jacob's God
she wanted to believe
that his God was the Holy One
who would her love receive.
When Jacob told her of his dream
she helped him understand
that God was telling him to go
and dwell in Canaan's land.

Soon Leah bore him many sons,
but Jacob still was grieved,
for barren Rachel bore him none,
only her maid conceived.
Then Rachel gave birth to a son ??
her wish had now come true.
And God told Jacob one more time:
"Go! I will be with you."

Now Jacob was called Israel,
the promised name God gave.
When Rachel died bearing a son
he mourned her in her grave.
Then Jacob leaned on Leah's strength;
she brought him needed rest.
The love she showed him never left ??
his second choice, yet blessed!
