SCD Discipleship Boot Camp Comes to Mozambique: Rekindling Faith, Practicing Identity, Fulfilling Mission
By Bener Agtarap
Dates: October 29–31, 2025
Location: Beira, Mozambique
This fall, the School of Congregational Development (SCD) will host a three-day Discipleship Boot Camp in Beira, Mozambique, designed specifically for United Methodist district superintendents and district lay leaders across Mozambique, as well as for partners in the region. Grounded in Wesleyan theology and our shared mission “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world,” the training will equip leaders to teach, model, and multiply intentional discipleship in their districts.
Why this Boot Camp—and Why Now?
At its heart, the Boot Camp is built around three convictions:
- Identity is a calling. United Methodist distinctives—our theology of grace, history, and connectional life—shape how we lead.
- Mission begins with formation. Transforming the world starts in the local church with practices that form Christlike people.
- Leadership is connectional and transformational. District leaders are more than administrators; they are spiritual shepherds who cultivate discipleship, accountability, and unity across congregations.
Who will be there?
A cohort of fifty-one leaders will participate, including district superintendents, clergy, and lay leaders from Mozambique’s North, Southeast, and South Conferences, as well as representatives from the South Africa Annual Conference and the Madagascar Mission Area.
What you’ll learn (and take home)
Participants will leave ready to:
- Host district-level identity workshops that make Wesleyan essentials accessible and contextual.
- Equip local church leaders with practical tools for discipleship rooted in United Methodist mission and Wesleyan theology.
- Launch a district-wide leadership plan that mobilizes clergy and laity for witness, service, and community engagement.
The impact we’re aiming for
- Renewed identity: Leaders who can clearly teach and embody United Methodist distinctives.
- Missional momentum: Congregations that love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously—empowered by the Holy Spirit.
- Multiplying disciples: Contextual training that revitalizes local churches and expands witness in their communities.
Rev. Bener Agtarap, lead staff for resourcing the SCD initiative, says, “We cannot fulfill the mission of making disciples without knowing who we are and why we are sent. When United Methodist leaders know their identity and live it out faithfully, the church becomes a transforming presence in the world.”
For United Methodist leaders across Mozambique and our regional partners, this Discipleship Boot Camp is a timely opportunity to rekindle faith, practice our identity, and fulfill our mission—together.
