멋진 크리스마스 – 가능할까?

마태복음 2:1~12

크리스마스가 다가오면, 괜스레 마음이 설렙니다. 반짝이는 조명, 화려한 장식, 캐럴 소리에 들뜨기도 합니다. 이번에는 특별한 일이 일어날 것 같은 기대도 생깁니다. 그러나 성탄절이 지나면 “혹시나” 했던 마음이 “역시나”라는 허전함으로 끝날 때가 많습니다.

왜 우리는 성탄절을 허무하게 보내는 걸까요? 그 이유 중 하나는 많은 신자들이 성탄의 주인공이신 예수님을 실제로 알지 못하기 때문입니다.

USA Today는 성탄절의 가장 중요한 것이 무엇인지 사람들에게 물었습니다. 대부분은 “선물”이라 답했고, “예수님의 탄생”이라고 한 사람은 3분의 1에 불과했습니다. 심리학 교수도 학생들에게 “크리스마스 하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 것은 무엇인가?”라고 물었을 때, 트리, 선물, 산타클로스, 휴일이라는 대답뿐, 예수님은 없었습니다.

믿지 않는 사람이라면 이해할 수 있습니다. 그러나 신자들까지 성탄을 가족, 선물, 파티로만 생각한다면 분명 문제가 있습니다. 주인공 없는 잔치에 무슨 감동이 있겠습니까?

누가복음 2장을 보면, 마리아와 요셉은 예루살렘에서 돌아오다가 예수님을 잃어버렸습니다. 그들은 예수님이 함께 있다고 생각했지만, 실제로는 하룻길 떨어진 곳에서 그분 없이 걸었습니다. 오늘 우리의 모습도 같습니다. 우리는 “예수님이 함께하신다”라고 생각하지만 실제로는 그분 없이 살아가고 있지는 않습니까?

한 목사님의 딸은 여름날 아이스크림을 거절하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “예수님이 제 마음에 계신데, 아이스크림을 먹으면 예수님이 추우실 것 같아요.” 아이에게는 예수님이 마음에 계신다는 것이 실제였습니다.

예수님이 내 마음에 계신다는 사실이 실제가 될 때 성탄은 달라집니다. 배우자의 생일을 잊으면 큰일 나지 않습니까? 그런데 우리는 종종 배우자의 생일은 챙기면서, 예수님의 생일은 건너뜁니다. 예수님과의 친밀한 교제가 없기 때문입니다.

옛날 한 나라의 왕자를 구해 준 나무꾼은 왕의 요청에 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리 집에 하루만 머물러 주시면 영광입니다.” 왕이 그의 집에 온다는 사실만으로도 마을 전체가 달라졌습니다. 길이 넓어지고, 집이 수리되고, 잔치가 준비되었습니다. 예수님이 우리 마음에 오신다면, 얼마나 더 큰 변화가 일어겠습니까?

동방박사들은 별을 따라 먼 길을 달려와 아기 예수께 경배했습니다. 성탄은 은혜받기 전에 예수님께 드리고, 경배드리는 날입니다.

성 프란시스는 유산을 버리고 주님을 따랐습니다. 아프리카의 리빙스턴은 어린 시절 헌금이 없어 헌금 바구니에 자신의 두 발을 올려놓으며 자신을 드렸습니다. 왜 우리는 그들처럼 감동적인 신앙으로 살지 못할까요? 주님을 향한 갈망이 부족하기 때문입니다.

사랑하는 여러분, 이번 성탄절에는 은혜받기 위해서가 아니라, 예수님께 드리기 위해 예배에 오시기 바랍니다. 그때 성탄의 진정한 감격을 경험하게 될 것입니다. 예수님을 만난 사람은 그분이 계신 낮고 어두운 곳으로 향하게 됩니다. 성탄 이야기는 가난과 낮아짐의 이야기입니다. 마구간, 구유, 여관도 잡지 못했던 현실 속에서 오신 주님은 지금도 우리를 낮은 곳으로 부르십니다.

동방박사들도 처음에는 예수님을 궁궐에서 찾았지만, 참된 왕은 초라한 곳에 계셨습니다. 오늘 우리의 성탄도 화려함이 아니라, 낮은 곳에서 주님을 만날 때 진정한 감동이 있습니다.

작가 존 그리샴의 소설 『크리스마스를 건너뛰기』에서도, 주인공은 크리스마스를 피하려 했지만 결국 이웃과 사랑을 나누며 성탄의 참 감동을 경험합니다.

예수님께서 세례 요한의 제자들에게 “가난한 자에게 복음이 전해진다”는 말씀을 하셨습니다. 이것이 참된 성탄의 증거입니다.

사랑하는 여러분, 이번 크리스마스에는 가족과 함께 병든 자, 외로운 자, 도움이 필요한 자들을 찾아가십시오. 선물을 나누고, 캐럴을 부르며, 예수님의 사랑을 전하십시오. 그때야말로 여러분의 인생에서 가장 ‘멋진 크리스마스’를 경험하게 될 것입니다. 아멘.

A Wonderful Christmas – Is It Possible?

Matthew 2:1-12

As Christmas approaches, we often feel excited. Sparkling lights, bright decorations, and carols lift our spirits. We expect something special to happen. Yet, when Christmas passes, many of us are left with the emptiness of “I thought maybe… but it was just the same.”

Why do we so often end Christmas with emptiness? One reason is that many believers do not truly know the central figure of Christmas—Jesus Christ.

USA Today once asked, “What is the most important thing about Christmas?” Most people answered “presents,” while only about one-third said “the birth of Jesus.” A psychology professor asked his students, “What comes to mind when you hear ‘Christmas’?” Their answers were trees, gifts, Santa Claus, holidays—but not one said, “Jesus.”

This is understandable for unbelievers. But if even Christians think of Christmas only as family, gifts, and parties, then we have a problem. What joy can a celebration have without its true guest of honor?

In Luke 2, Mary and Joseph lost Jesus on their way back from Jerusalem. They assumed he was with them, but they walked an entire day without him. Isn’t that our story too? We say, “Jesus is with me,” but often live as though he is absent.

A pastor’s daughter once refused ice cream on a hot summer day. When asked why, she said softly, “Jesus lives in my heart, and if I eat ice cream, he might get cold.” For her, Jesus’ presence in her heart was a reality.

When the reality of Jesus living in our hearts becomes true, Christmas is transformed. Forgetting a spouse’s birthday is a serious matter, isn’t it? Yet often we celebrate our spouse’s birthday but overlook Jesus’ birthday. Why? Because our communion with him is weak.

A woodsman once saved a prince’s life. The king asked him to name his reward, and the woodsman said, “If the king would stay one night in my home, that would be enough.” Just the king’s presence changed, the whole village—roads widened, homes were repaired, and feasts prepared. How much greater the transformation when Jesus truly enters our hearts!

The magi traveled far, following the star, to worship the Christ child. Christmas is first and foremost not about receiving grace, but about offering our worship and gifts to Jesus.

Saint Francis gave up his inheritance to follow Christ. David Livingstone, as a boy, once placed his own feet in the basket offering because he had nothing else to give. Why can’t we live with such passion? Because our longing for Jesus is too small.

Beloved, this Christmas, do not come to worship merely to receive. Come to give yourself to Jesus. Then you will experience the true wonder of Christmas. Those who truly meet Jesus are led into places of humility and darkness, because the story of Christmas is a story of poverty and lowliness. Born in a manger, with no room in the inn, our Lord still calls us today to meet him in lowly places.

Even the magi first searched for Jesus in a palace, but the true king was found in humility. Likewise, the real joy of Christmas is found not in splendor, but in meeting the Lord among the lowly.

In John Grisham’s novel Skipping Christmas, the protagonist tried to avoid Christmas but rediscovered its true meaning by sharing love with his neighbors.

Jesus said to John the Baptist’s disciples, “The good news is preached to the poor.” This is the true sign of Christmas.

Beloved, this Christmas, with your families, visit the sick, the lonely, and the needy. Share gifts, sing carols, and spread the love of Jesus. Then you will truly experience the most “wonderful Christmas” of your life. Amen.
