Bishop Héctor A. Burgos Núñez Appointed President of Discipleship Ministries Board of Directors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. January 9, 2023/Discipleship Ministries/ – Bishop Héctor A. Burgos Núñez, newly elected Bishop of The United Methodist Church who was assigned to serve The Upper New York Area, was unanimously voted in by the Council of Bishops Leadership Discernment Committee as the new President of the Board of Directors for Discipleship Ministries, effective January 1, 2023.

“I am deeply humbled by the honor to serve through the Board of Directors of Discipleship Ministries and excited about the possibilities ahead. God is calling us to shine brightly with the light of Christ, sharing faith, love, mercy, and justice with all people and in all places,” Bishop Héctor said. “The work of Discipleship Ministries is crucial as it supports conferences and local congregations in developing world-changing disciples in creative and innovative ways.”

Bishop Héctor is the first Hispanic-Latino bishop in the Northeastern Jurisdiction and the first Puerto Rican bishop in The United Methodist Church.

Serving in UMC leadership roles for nearly two decades, Bishop Héctor holds a Master of Divinity and a bachelor’s in business administration with a concentration in management and strategic marketing and a graduate certificate in information systems technology. He is passionate about leadership development, evangelism, contextual worship, and institutional and racial equity. He is supported by his spouse, Jazelis Adorno, and children, Fabián, Joel, Marcos, and Valeria.
