In April 2008, General Conference adopted legislation inviting congregations to celebrate Older Adult Recognition Day on any Sunday during May. United Methodists are invited to show appreciation and support for older adults who continue to enrich and strengthen our faith communities.

Spirituality is key to a vital old age. In fact, aging is often referred to as a spiritual journey. As older adults develop faith maturity and grow in Christian faith, they often exhibit certain characteristics. They place an emphasis on connecting with others, finding meaning and purpose in life, and holding personal power to influence outcomes. When older adults perceive aging as a spiritual journey, they raise the priority of enhancing their relationships with God, loved ones, faith communities, and communities of residence.

Worship Suggestions for an Older Adult Recognition Sunday

Far too often, we think only of the dreams and visions for the future of our young men and women. We plan our church programs for those we feel can “grow” the church. We seek out “new” leadership for our committees and ministries. The money in our budgets goes to Christian education for our children, youth, and young adults and to activities to support these age groups and families. We are not intentional about engaging our older adults in ministry.
