While We Slept

The earth moved – again.

As loved ones filled
with unspeakable grief
dug through the rubble
on one side of the earth.

The earth moved again.
The mountain shuddered again on ours.

The earth moved
while the wind blows hard
against closed shutters
and boarded windows.
Again.

The earth moves, the winds blow, and the bridge fell down!
while soldiers clutch pictures of their children
in unfamiliar places.

All Creation groans.
We groan
as we wait.

Have mercy on your people, Lord.
Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
