When Faithful King Josiah

Based on 2 Chronicles 34:22-33

When faithful King Josiah
heard that the book of law
was found among the rubble
his heart was filled with awe.
He called the priest, Hilkiah,
to ask the Lord for him
the meaning of the writing
concerning Judah's sin.

The prophetess named Huldah
was given the precious scroll.
She pondered its true meaning,
found words which stirred her soul.
'The Lord your God keeps covenant
with those who are his own,
and cursed will be all others
who worship gods unknown.'

The fear of God consumed her,
for she must tell the priest
their nation would be ended
unless their evil ceased.
To king and all of Israel
God's word of truth rang sure:
'Repent, renew the covenant,
you will be loved, secure.'

We sing our praise for Huldah,
a heroine unsung,
who saved her country's culture
as to her faith she clung.
With Huldah's contribution
Judeans came to be
a 'people of the book,' led
to live their unity.
