What Would You Sell?

United Methodist hymn writer F. Richard Garland writes of this new hymn:

Yesterday in Church Pastor Lorene Eldredge preached on the Parables of the Kingdom from Matthew 13:44-52. She observed that, "In the parable, those finding the treasure went and sold all their possessions . . . they did something, they made a commitment of time, of finance, and of talent." It was her phrase, "take stock of what you own," that engaged me. Working from the Matthew text (the image of the 'pearl of great price' has been a favorite of mine for many, many years) and using that phrase, I have written the following new text.
