We Sing Of Ruth, The Faithful
Recommended Tune: Wie Lieblich Ist Der Maien by Johann Steulein (1575)
Meter: 75 76 D
We sing of Ruth the faithful
who dared to stand alone.
She left her faith and culture,
made Israel her home.
She would not leave Naomi,
but promised she would be
one with her and her people
throughout eternity. She was a loyal daughter
who went at harvest time
to glean for them the kernels
the reapers left behind.
While there she met with Boaz
who welcomed her request.
He blessed her, gave her safety,
and treated her as guest.Naomi gave Ruth counsel
to go at eventide
and secretly to find him,
then lie down by his side.
When Boaz got the holdings
of all Naomi's clan,
he took Ruth as his partner
according to God's plan. The son she bore was Obed
whose heir was Mary's son.
Thus Ruth became a model
for women yet to come . . .
She witnessed how God's caring
extends to every race,
and calls us each to practice
the sharing of God's grace.
