Review of Sing with All the Saints in Glory: A Festival of Hymns CD

Trinity English Lutheran Church Choirs
Robert A. Hobby and Jeremy J. Bankson, Conductors

The congregation, choirs, members of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and guests of Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, gathered in their Gothic sanctuary for an All Saints Hymn Festival on November 10, 2002, directed by Robert A. Hobby and Jeremy J. Bankson, Trinity's director and associate director of music. The result was a hymn festival filled with marvelous congregational singing and beautiful choral singing of some of the great hymns and choral literature, accompanied by the philharmonic and the church's 92-rank Aeolian Skinner and 12-rank Reuter organs and its 3-stop Flemish double harpsichord built by Peter Tkach.

The festival program is a model of good hymn festivals, with choral works, congregational hymns, narration for reflection and meditation, all bound together by the All Saints theme. This is not a studio recording, a fact made clear by the acoustics duplicated on the recording. The program included:

  • Choral Prelude: "Psalm 150," César Franck
  • Hymn: "For All the Saints," Sine Nomine
  • Reflection: God's Faithful Offer Praise
  • Hymn: "O God Beyond All Praising," Thaxted
  • Reflection: The Death and Resurrection of Jesus
  • Hymn: "O Sacred Head," Herzlich Tut Mich Verlangen
  • Hymn: "Jesus Christ is Risen Today," Lyra Davidica
  • Reflection: The Church of All Times
  • Hymn: "The Church's One Foundation," Aurelia
  • Reflection: Our Earthly Journey
  • Hymn: "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," St. Columba
  • Hymn: "Beloved, God's Chosen," Andrew's Song
  • Hymn: "Song of Hope," Argentine folk song
  • Reflection: The Promise of Eternal Life
  • Hymn: "Shall We Gather at the River," Hanson Place
  • Prayer
  • Choral Prayer: "Eternal God," John Rutter
  • Hymn: "Sing with All the Saints in Glory," Hymn to Joy
  • Postlude: "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" from Cantata 80, J. S. Bach
