Litany of Dedication for Covenant Discipleship Groups

Include this litany as part of an annual worship service that includes a congregational Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant (see The United Methodist Hymnal pages 50-53). Invite members of existing and newly formed Covenant Discipleship groups to stand or to come forward to face the congregation.

Pastor:
In baptism we are born anew by water and the Spirit and called to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. God provides the grace that empowers Christians to live as faithful members of God’s household and as Christ’s representatives in the world.

We present today names, our sisters and brothers of God’s household, to be members of a Covenant Discipleship group. They seek to grow in faith and love of God and neighbors through watching over one another in love as they witness to Jesus Christ in the world and follow his teachings through acts of compassion, justice, worship and devotion under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

CD Group Members:
Jesus calls us to love God with all our hearts, and with all our souls, and with all our minds, and with all our strength; and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus also commands us to love one another as he loves us. By this everyone will know that we are his disciples, if we have love for one another. Christ gives us the grace we need to do this.

Spouses, Family, and Friends (with hands on the shoulders of their CD group member):
By God’s grace, we will support you in all your efforts to live and grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ. we promise you our love and support.

CD Group Members:
By the Spirit’s power, we will witness to Jesus Christ in the world and follow his teachings through acts of compassion, justice, worship and devotion. We welcome God’s working through us as we seek to grow in faith, hope, and love.

Congregation:
We reaffirm the vows we make at every baptism. We will surround you with a community of love and forgiveness so that you may grow in your trust of God and be found faithful in your service to others. We will do all in our power to increase your faith, confirm your hope and perfect you in love. We will pray for you that you may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life.

Pastor:
The God of all grace, who has called us to eternal glory in Christ, establish you and strengthen you by the power of the Holy Spirit, that you may live in grace and peace.
