Inspirer of the Ancient Seers

Text: Charles Wesley, 1762
Music: tune, WER NUR DEN LIEBEN GOTT, by Georg Neumark, 1657
Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Topics: Scripture, Holy Bible, inspired word, Word of God

This classic Wesley text is from Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures, a two-volume hymnal published in 1762.

Tune composer Georg Neumark (1621-1681) studied law but became court poet, librarian, and registrar at Weimar, and later secretary of the ducal archives. He wrote many of his hymns in difficult personal times, including his final year of life without sight. (See Carlton Young, Companion to The United Methodist Hymnal, Abingdon Press, 1993.)
