How Do I Find a Local UMC Music Position?

Unfortunately, there is no central location for you to pursue such a goal. You must be willing to pursue a variety of courses. Here are some:
  1. Join The Fellowship of United Methodists In Music and Worship Arts. This organization sponsors convocations and workshops in all parts of the country. It also has a bimonthly publication with articles on all aspects of worship and music in the UMC, as well as job openings. Their website is www.fummwa.org. This is an excellent place to begin to network with others in UMC worship and music.
  2. Subscribe to the United Methodist Musicians listserv at no charge. To subscribe to this list, go to "Methodist Musicians" and complete the simple form. This listserv is an interactive exchange of messages among those interested in United Methodist worship and music in the local congregation. It is often an interesting and lively exchange.
  3. Consider entering the certification program for church musicians in the UMC, sponsored by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. You can find out about this on our website for Training and Certification. This is a certification in church music offered to UMC musicians that many employing congregations consider when hiring. You can complete this program during four successive summers at Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, as well as other programs at other schools.
