Helping Children and Youth Develop Good Giving Habits

Provide brief prayers of thanksgiving for children and youth to use with their offerings. Ask children and youth to make their own pledges and to tithe their own money. Encourage the participation of children and youth through a variety of gift-giving opportunities, where they can lay gifts directly on the altar or on some other symbolic place. Meet with Sunday school teachers, fellowship group leaders, and weekday activity leaders. Provide them with information about the importance of good giving habits. Ask for ideas and support for helping children and youth. Provide opportunities for parents to learn ways of teaching consistent giving to their children. Emphasize consistency of giving. Ask for time during confirmation classes to teach youth about the congregation's financial needs, connectional giving, and tithing habits. Provide offering envelopes for children and youth. Encourage missional giving as well as giving to the church budget. Set up the financial giving records so that confirmed youth have their own records. Include them individually in all financial mailings. Ask children and youth for ideas to promote giving. Develop an ongoing plan of financial education for children and youth.
