Enlighten Minds, O God (Prayer for a Christian Pattern)
Words: Nickolas Campbell, 2014
Music: tune, DIADEMATA, George J. Elvey, 1868
Nickolas Campbell writes of this hymn: "This hymn is inspired by John Wesley's preface to 'An Extract of the Christian's Pattern, or A Treatise on the Imitation of Christ' by Thomas a Kempis. He wrote: 'Labour for a temper correspondent to what you read: otherwise it will prove empty and unprofitable, while it only enlightens your understanding, without influencing your will, or inflaming your affections.' The verses are a prayer for God to enlighten our minds, to influence our wills, and to enflame our affections."
