Brother Roger, In Memoriam
This weekend (Saturday, August 16, 2008) marks the third anniversary of the death of Brother Roger, founder of the Taizé Community. On that date in 2005, as Brother Roger and the Community of Taizé and its many visitors gathered for evening prayer in the Church of Reconciliation, Brother Roger was attacked and murdered by a mentally ill woman with a knife. Brother Roger was ninety years old and six days shy of the sixty-fifth anniversary of his founding of the Taizé Community.
Although Brother Roger was neither author nor composer of any of the great body of worship music that comes from the Taizé Community, it is appropriate to recall that music that is contained in The United Methodist Hymnal and in The Faith We Sing. We do not need to restrict its use to Taizé services, but can freely include these short pieces in other worship opportunities and in private devotions. They may be sung as congregational responses before and after prayer, during the procession forward for the sacrament of Holy Communion, as introits and benedictions, seasonal responses, responses to the Psalms and the reading of Scripture, and many occasions during worship.
