A Service of Song and Worship for Christ the King Sunday

We observe Christ the King on the last Sunday after Pentecost, which is also the last Sunday of the Christian year and the Sunday before the new year begins with Advent. According to our Book of Worship (page 419), traditionally Christ the King is set aside as a celebration of the coming reign of Jesus Christ and the completion of creation.

This worship service for Christ the King Sunday is primarily composed of Scripture and song. You are free to download and use this order as it is or adapt it in as needed. As the final Sunday of the church year, Christ the King is also a fitting day to recall the entire year just concluded in Scripture, prayer, congregational song, and music offered by choir or soloists.

Considerations in planning this service:

  1. The service may consist entirely of Scripture, prayer, and music.
  2. The service may include or omit the sermon.
  3. Choir and music directors will recognize this Sunday as an opportunity to involve all the choirs of the church in this festive service, with music selected from among the best and favorites of the preceding year.
  4. Feel free to vary the structure within each season. You may include Scripture, hymn, and choir/solo, or just scripture and hymn or Scripture and choir/solo.
  5. Lessons selected for this service have been chosen from the Revised Common Lectionary for the past year. You may wish to select other passages to support your selection of hymns or choir music.
  6. Several hymns or songs are provided for each season. Choose from among these or others.
  7. Holy Week may be omitted or included as part of Lent.
  8. The "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah is available as a free download from Discipleship Ministries It is offered in downloadable print format for choir or bulletin inserts as well as a PowerPoint version for projection and congregational singing.
  9. One word of caution — there are two other observances on this Sunday that you may want to include in this service. The last Sunday in November is also observed as United Methodist Student Day, and there may be a special offering taken. This may also be an opportunity to use college students home for Thanksgiving as worship leaders. This is also the Sunday that concludes the long Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S.A.
