21st Century Africana Liturgy Resources: Worship Resources for the Third Sunday of Advent, Year C

Gathering Meditation
(Based on Philippians 4:4-7)
Rejoice in the Lord always. Let's say it again. Rejoice! Repeat that sounding joy! Hold nothing back. Let go of worries. Let go of cares. Bring everything to God in prayer and once again, rejoice! Let's say it again. Rejoice! Repeat that sounding joy! Rejoice until you know, you know, God's peace that passes all description. Rejoice in the Lord always. Let's say it again. Rejoice!

Pastoral Prayer
(Based on Luke 3:7-18) God, we know that you are concerned about things that matter. We gather as the people of God, we say, to make a difference. We go into the world, we say, to transform it. John the Baptist spoke to people gathered in God's name to prepare them to receive the First Coming of Christ. We gather today to prepare for the Second Coming of Christ.

As we gather, let us remember that nothing matters if God disapproves. Nothing we do matters if our deeds only impress ourselves. Even our faith does not matter, if our ancestors believed in God, but we don't. The only important thing is what matters to God. What must we do? Bear the fruit of repentance. What must we do? Help the poor. What must we do? Stop taking advantage of others. What must we do to prepare for Christ's Second Coming? God, we'll keep asking, what must we do?

Amen.
