I had given up on church. I was hurt and tired of the judgment, the condescending looks from others, and the image of a God who was waiting to cast me out at the slightest thing. I was done. And hurt. And then I stumbled upon these people called RISE. They are different. I feel hopeful. I have met a different God than the one I used to know, and I now believe that God truly loves me.

One memory that will always stay with me is the overwhelming sense of joy that I felt during our first worship service. It was incredible to feel and see God moving among us and in spite of us. We wondered if anyone would come - and then they did. They came, and came, and came. And we sang, and celebrated, and experienced the movement of God in unimaginable ways

I remember sending out one email, just one. One email to the JMU campus community about our two mentoring programs. Just one email generated sincere interest from over sixty college-age mentors. We couldn't believe it - we used to struggle to get twelve mentors! Sixty - whoa! We now have launched a third mentoring program, and the mentoring programs continue to grow.

I was so moved by my experience at HARTS (Harrisonburg and Rockingham Thermal Shelter), a mobile homeless shelter. We hosted them at the RISE Mission House, and I'll admit, I was nervous. I hadn't ever hung out with homeless people before. I didn't know what to say, or if I might offend them. But I loved it, and loved them. I learned that deep down, we are all very similar. I'm pretty sure that I met Jesus that night at HARTS.

One of the things I love most about RISE is that we are accepting of those who would be typically be ostracized at other churches. One of my friends came to RISE recently, and he was deeply moved by the love he received. He said that he and many others like him wouldn't have the courage to go to most churches. Just because someone is "different" doesn't mean they aren't allowed to love God or be loved by God. I believe that everyone (everyone everyone) is loved by God and should be allowed to love God openly.

The Community is a new movement of faith in Boone County, KY and meeting at Indiana Wesleyan University Florence Campus. We just launched on February 5, 2012. Urban Village Church is a new community of people trying to do church differently. We are committed to creating a diverse Christian community in the heart of the city, an "urban village" where we build relationships with each other and with God. These relationships change our lives and also change the world. We desire to be bold, inclusive, and relevant.

When Rock H. moved to Toledo to help care for her grandchildren, she began to look for a church. She had been in recovery from drugs and alcohol for 13 years, but being in a new place with no support system, she was afraid she might return to her old habits. When she found The Village Church, she found an accepting community that she never believed existed. She found love. She tested us, but in her words, we just kept loving her. Recently she gave her testimony when we hosted a fund raiser for local food pantries with live music at a local bar. Her t shirt "No Perfect People Allowed" has become the motto of The Village Church. We try to be a welcome community for all imperfect people.

I'm so excited to share what is happening here at Embrace Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (www.iamembrace.com) We're seeing something which is nothing less than God clearly being at work. Seeing lives changed. People getting plugged into small groups. Making a tangible impact on the community. People coming to know Christ. When it comes to worship, we've gone from an average of 327 people this past August to reaching as high as 850+ in worship! Over doubling in size in less than 7 months. What a gift to see new life being breathed into the UMC!

The Journey began in July 2012 with 10 people. We opened a small coffee shop on Main Street called The Journey Java Connection as a way of connecting with our community. We have live music, display local art and sell really good coffee. We began Celebrating weekly at the local high school in January 2012, but the heartbeat of our faith community is mission. We desire to see those far from God find hope and healing and we offer a variety of ways for people to connect with us. The baby that was conceived in July is ready to be born, and we are excited to see what God will do as we continue our Journey!
