'Who Are We Now?' How the Belong Series Helps Churches Reclaim Their Identity in Uncertain Times

The past few years have felt like a whirlwind for many United Methodist churches – denominational shifts, cultural upheaval, and ongoing uncertainty about the future. Amid all the change, one essential question arises: "Who are we?"

At Discipleship Ministries, we created the "Belong" series to help churches answer that question, reclaiming their core identity by anchoring discipleship in the foundational practices of Baptism, Holy Communion, and Membership Vows. More than just another study, the "Belong" series reconnects us with who we are as United Methodists and why that identity matters.

1. The Church at a Crossroads

In a recent webinar, Rev. Dr. Derek Weber, Director of Preaching Ministries, captured our collective struggle: “This series was born from a deep need to reaffirm our identity as United Methodists, especially amid denominational shifts.” Leaders across the connection are wrestling with discipleship clarity – how do we truly make and sustain disciples in today’s rapidly changing world?

2. Grounding Discipleship in the Sacraments

The "Belong" series returns us to basics, focusing on our sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion and our Membership Vows. Why these practices? Because they ground us in our shared story and commitment as followers of Jesus. The sacraments aren’t just rituals performed once and forgotten; they shape our daily lives and sustain our faith journey. As Rev. Dr. Weber emphasized, the series helps integrate these practices into everyday discipleship—transforming them from mere events into lifelong spiritual anchors.

3. How the ‘Belong’ Series Helps Churches Find Their Identity

4. How to Get Started

Flexibility is key. As noted during our webinar, you can begin using the" Belong" series in various ways:

  • Sermon series: Use the themes of "Belong" to shape a season of preaching.
  • Small-group studies: Engage members in discussion using the "Explore" materials.
  • New member classes: Help newcomers understand what being part of a United Methodist church means.

We Are Still United Methodists. We Still Belong.

No matter what changes come, one thing remains true: We are still a people called by grace, gathered in community, and sent out for the transformation of the world.

Baptism, Holy Communion, and our Membership Vows aren’t just rituals of the past – they are the foundation for our present and future. If your church has been asking, “Who are we now?” – "Belong" is here to help you find the answer.

The truth is: We are people of grace, people of belonging, people called to discipleship. And that calling hasn’t changed.

Let’s rediscover it together.

If you’re ready to reclaim your identity in your church, start with the "Belong" series today!
