Churches Planting Churches Looks to 2021

In the last two years, more than fifty U.S. congregations have engaged in the Churches Planting Churches process with Discipleship Ministries’ Path 1 team. These congregations have one thing in common: they are looking to plant new places for new people in the year ahead. Sometimes congregations have maxed out their current facilities; other times, the congregations are adopting a new property where a previous ministry had waned or closed. Still other times, congregations want a fresh new space for ministry that is beyond anything churchy.

Churches Planting Churches is about partnering such churches with proven churches that have already developed successful multisite ministry. In the past two years, these teaching churches have included First United Methodist Church, McKinney, Texas; Crossroads Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Apex Family of Churches, Apex, North Carolina; Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina; The Gathering in St. Louis, Missouri; Friendship UMC in Athens, Alabama; and Cornerstone Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Future Churches Planting Churches teaching churches include NETT (Nations Experiencing Transformation Together) Church near Atlanta, Georgia; Embrace Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and First United Methodist Church in Boise, Idaho. In addition, there will be repeat engagements with past teaching churches.

In 2021, Churches Planting Churches will be offered both as a physical gathering at a teaching church in the fall and as an online training in the spring and in the late summer/fall. Details and dates will be posted soon.

We are interested in partnering with annual conferences to customize this program to help a conference advance its ministry objectives. If you would like to explore a partnership between your conference and Path 1 focused on equipping your highest-capacity churches for great multisite work, please reach out to Paul Nixon, director of church multiplication at Discipleship Ministries, [email protected]. Paul would love to hear what your conference is seeking to do and explore how Path 1 might help you.
