Another CPC Alum Thriving in Ministry in the COVID-19 Moment
By Paul Nixon
First United Methodist Church, Prairie Campus, is a satellite campus of First United Methodist, Colorado Springs. Prairie Campus launched in April 2019. When COVID-19 hit, the congregation focused on how to continue their momentum and growth as a new faith community during the pandemic. Starting in May 2020, they began drive-in Sunday worship services, which they held in the parking lot of the school they used to rent for worship services. Folks pulled into the parking lot, stayed in their cars for worship, tuned their radios to 104.9, and Pastor Patty Walker preached from the back of a pick-up truck. It's like John Wesley's field preaching, but twenty-first-century style.
It's been a great outreach to the neighborhood because it is visible to the neighbors. On Sunday mornings, neighbors are walking their dogs, taking a jog, or just driving by. Some stop and listen, out of curiosity. Several have joined the worship service because of this visibility. The Prairie Campus plans to hold drive-in services until October when the weather turns cold in Colorado.
