예배의 기원

거룩하신 하나님, 하나님께서 거룩하게 구별하신 복된 주일에 은혜를 사모하는 주님의 자녀들이 한자리에 모였습니다. 세상에 살면서 피곤하여 지친 영혼들이 주님의 전에서 생명의 주님을 바라봅니다. 우리의 상한 마음을 어루만져 주시고 하늘의 위로와 평강으로 채워 주소서. 300여 년 전에 웨슬리 목사님의 마음에 임하신 주님의 성령이 이 시간 우리에게도 동일하게 임하셔서 우리의 영혼을 새롭게 하시고 삶을 변화시켜 주소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기원합니다. 아멘.

나는 전능하신 아버지 하나님, 천지의 창조주를 믿습니다.

나는 그의 유일하신 아들, 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 믿습니다. 그는 성령으로 잉태되어 동정녀 마리아에게서 나시고, 본 디오 빌라도에게 고난을 받아 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으시고, 장사된 지 사흘 만에 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살아나셨으며, 하늘에 오르시어 전능하신 하나님 우편에 앉아 계시다가 거기로부터 살아 있는 자와 죽은 자를 심판하러 오십니다.

목회 기도

성령으로 우리를 새롭게 하시는 하나님, 오늘 웨슬리회심주일을 맞이하여 마음을 점검해 봅니다. 하나님께서는 외모를 보시지 않고 마음의 중심을 보십니다. 외형적 행위를 보시지 않고 내 마음 중심에 정말로 주님을 신뢰하고 주님만을 바라보며 신앙생활 하는지 점검하십니다. 혹시 성결의 능력 없이 외형적 종교 생활만 하는 거짓 신자가 되지 않았는지 자신을 돌아봅니다. 온 맘과 정성을 다해 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 순수한 신앙인이 아니라, 단지 율법적 삶에 집중하며 살지는 않았는지 돌아봅니다. 이 시간 우리 영혼을 새롭게 하시고 속사람을 변화시켜 주소서. 온전히 주님의 길을 신뢰하고 주님의 뜻에 순종하는 참 신앙인의 모습을 회복하게 하소서. 오래전 웨슬리 목사님을 변화시키고 그의 회심을 통해 감리교 운동을 시작하신 성령님께서 오늘 우리 심령에도 임하시어 구원의 확신을 주시고 하늘의 능력을 힘입게 하소서. 그래서 이 시대를 개혁하는 거룩한 도구로 우리를 사용하시고 우리 교회를 사용하소서. 보혜사 성령을 보내신 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.

지금은 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 하나님 아버지의 지극한 사랑과 성령의 넘치는 역사가, 구원은 행함으로 얻지 않고 오직 믿음으로 얻는다는 진리를 마음에 새기고, 이제부터 주님의 은총을 전적으로 신뢰하며 담대히 구원의 삶을 살기로 결단하는 주님의 모든 자녀 위에 영원히 함께하시기를 간절히 축원합니다.

“저녁에 나는 크게 내키지 않는 마음으로 올더스게이트가에 있는 신도회 모임에 갔다. 거기서 어떤 사람이 루터가 쓴 로마서 서문을 읽고 있었다. 8시 45분경, 그가 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 통해 하나님께서 신자의 마음에 일으키시는 변화를 설명할 때, 나는 마음이 이상하게 따뜻해지는 것을 느꼈다. 나는 내가 정말 그리스도를 신뢰한다고 느꼈다. 구원을 위해 오직 그리스도 한 분만을 신뢰한다고 느꼈다. 그리고 그리스도께서 나의 죄, 심지어 나 같은 사람의 죄까지도 없애주셨고, 죄와 사망의 법에서 나를 구원하셨다는 확신을 얻었다.” (웨슬리 일기, 1738년 5월 24일)

Holy God, we, your children, have gathered in this sacred place, yearning for your grace on this blessed Sunday, a day you have set apart as holy. Our weary souls, weighed down by the burdens of the world, now turn to you, the Lord of life. Touch our broken hearts and fill us with the comfort and peace of heaven. PASTORAL PRAYER

God, who renews us through your Holy Spirit, as we commemorate Wesley’s Conversion Sunday, we pause to examine our hearts. You do not see as humans see, for you look beyond outward appearances and actions, searching the depths of our hearts. Do we truly trust in you, living by faith and relying wholly on your grace? We confess that we may have fallen into mere outward religion, devoid of the power of holiness. Have we become legalistic rather than loving you with all our heart and loving our neighbors with sincerity? Renew our spirits and transform our innermost being. Restore in us the true character of believers who trust completely in your ways and faithfully obey your will. Just as your Holy Spirit transformed Wesley long ago, sparking the Methodist movement through his conversion, let that same Spirit come upon us today. Grant us assurance of salvation and empower us with heavenly strength. Use us and our church as vessels of holiness to reform and revive this generation. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who sent the Counselor, the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Now, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the deep love of God the Father, and the powerful work of the Holy Spirit be with all of God’s children, as we inscribe in our hearts the truth that salvation is not by works but by faith alone. May we trust fully in the Lord’s grace from now on and boldly live a life of salvation. May his blessings remain with us always. Amen.

The following passage is an excerpt from Wesley’s journal, where he records his experience of conversion. This can be added to the introduction of the worship service, included in the sermon, or printed in the program.

“In the evening, I went very unwillingly to a Society in Aldersgate-Street, where one was reading Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ; Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me, that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.” (Wesley’s Journal, May 24, 1738)

Samuel Hong wrote this order of Wesley Conversion Sunday Service for a bilingual Korean-English congregation. This service may be used when the Korean-speaking and English-speaking members worship together, and it may also be used when each worships separately.

Rev. Dr. Samuel Hong holds a BA in English and English Literature from Seoul National University and an M.Div. from Methodist Theological University in Seoul, Korea. He completed his M.T.S. at Duke Divinity School and earned a Ph.D. in Religion from Claremont Graduate University. Ordained in the California-Pacific Conference, he currently serves as the district superintendent for the El Camino Real District of the California-Nevada Conference.
