Hughes Named Adult Discipleship Director at Discipleship Ministries

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Feb. 3, 2015 /Discipleship Ministries/ – The Rev. Dr. M. Scott Hughes, an elder in the North Georgia Annual Conference, will become director of adult discipleship at Discipleship Ministries on July 1.

The appointment was announced by MaryJane Pierce Norton, associate general secretary for Leadership Resources at Discipleship Ministries.

“We are excited by the gifts and talents Dr. Hughes brings to the position of Director, Adult Discipleship,” Pierce Norton said. “In the United Methodist Church we are believers in life-long learning, and we feel faith formation plans are not just for children and for youth but are important for adults as well. Dr. Hughes brings passion and skills for involving adults in small groups, in special studies and in adult Sunday school.”

Hughes has served as associate pastor at Douglasville First United Methodist Church in Douglasville, Ga., since 2006.

“As we know our mission as the UMC is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world, which makes this position both daunting, as well as an exciting challenge,” Hughes said. “I hope this position will explore best practices and new ways to equip leaders in developing small-group ministries.”

Hughes currently serves on the Christians Engaged in Faith Formation (CEF) national board of directors. CEF is an association of United Methodists and persons from other denominations who have responsibility for Christian education or faith formation in any of its diverse forms, in and beyond the local church.

Hughes earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of West Georgia and a Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Southern Methodist University. His area of focus was spiritual formation.

“His D.Min. research on "Can Digital Technologies & Social Media Enhance Catechesis?" is particularly timely as we look at our culture and faith formation,” Pierce Norton said.
