Discipleship Ministries, an agency of The United Methodist Church, equips the church in its mission to challenge and support local church and annual conference leaders for their task of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.


Discipleship Ministries’ offices are located at 1908 Grand Avenue in Nashville, Tennessee. There are approximately 100 full time staff in the agency and an annual operating budget of $23 million.

The Position

Discipleship Ministries is seeking an exceptional candidate for our vacancy of General Secretary. The incumbent of this position will serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Discipleship Ministries (DM) and reports to The Board of Directors for Discipleship Ministries. The incumbent will exercise general administrative oversight of DM and provides visionary and strategic leadership focused upon the formation of vital and vibrant local churches on fire to transform the world. Leads the Discipleship Ministries Leadership Team, other staff and the Board of Directors in creative visioning of Discipleship Ministries future role in support of the overall mission of The United Methodist Church (UMC). Is accountable to the Board of Directors for the planning, coordination, interpretation and implementation of goals and objectives to support the Board’s vision/mission and directives of General Conference. Engages collaborative and collegial partnerships to extend DM’s response to the needs of The UMC across the world. Leads and supports DM’s fund development strategy and work. Must be an active member in The United Methodist Church with knowledge of structure and polity of The United Methodist Church and demonstrate true calling and commitment to be an equipped disciple of Jesus Christ.

Serves as Ex-officio member of DM’s Board of Directors and its Executive Committee and is responsible for the agenda and materials needed for all meetings of DM’s Board of Directors and its Executive Committee. Provides general guidance to members of the Board of Directors in developing and implementing policy for the agency.

Is accountable for carrying out duties and assignments authorized by DM’s Board of Directors and/or its Executive Committee and oversees the development and implementation of the programs and directions assigned to the agency by General Conference. Works with DM’s Leadership Team, staff, members of the Board of Directors, and key collaborative partners to provide creative visioning of DM’s response to the directives of the General Conference and to provide proactive responses to emerging needs of the United Methodist Church. Provides the leadership which enables the agency to carry out its primary purpose as stated in the United Methodist Book of Discipline and to build specific strategies that undergird the work of the agency.

Additional Knowledge Required

The successful candidate must have advanced, demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the structure, function and polity of The United Methodist Church; membership in The United Methodist Church; demonstrated biblical, theological, history, mission and vision and knowledge of how DM supports these understandings through the services it provides. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in informational systems, administrative and financial management, publishing, communication systems, educational training, theory and practice, faith formation, programmatic knowledge of local church, anti-bias and multicultural knowledge and sensitivity and knowledge of age level needs and learning patterns. Advanced and demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning and evaluation, including change management theory, business planning, and human resources management.


Master of Divinity required, preferred Doctorate of Ministry or equivalent; eight to ten years of related experience and demonstrated leadership ability and proven outcomes with fruitful, effective ministry on the local church, district, and/or conference level which can assist the church in understanding vitality. Previous history of effective involvement with innovative strategic visioning as well as operational program and personnel management.

The position will be elected by the Board of Directors. The hiring salary range is expected to be approximately $160,000 - $175,000 depending on qualifications.
