Perpetua, The Martyr
Harmony:Johann Sebastian Bach (1729)
Meter: 76.76 D
Perpetua, the martyr,
committed to life's end,
left husband, son, and father
to be with Christ, her friend.
In times of persecution
her thoughts toward heaven soared.
She chose to go through suffering
to gain divine reward.Baptized by water, Spirit,
she joined Christ's family.
From house arrest to prison
she claimed her destiny.
The record of her visions
for those she left behind
ceased when the beasts devoured her;
yet faith holds her enshrined.For us Perpetua's passion
still holds its timelessness;
for we too seek to follow
the path our God does bless.
The memory of her actions
encourage us today
to stand firm as we witness,
and live the words we pray.
