Lent And Good Friday Hymns

United Methodist musician and composer Ryan D. Neaveill has arranged three familiar Lenten hymns for congregational, choral, or instrumental use in worship: Were You There?; Behold, the Savior of Mankind; and What Wondrous Love Is This?

Were You There?; Behold, The Savior of Mankind & What Wondrous LoveIs This? Trilogy (PDF format)

  • Were You There?
The familiar African American spiritual is given a distinctly modern harmonization.
  • Behold, the Savior of Mankind
This hymn by Samuel Wesley (1662-1735), father of John and Charles, is included in The United Methodist Hymnal (1989) as text only at no. 293. Neaveill has set it to a haunting early American tune, Leander
  • What Wondrous Love Is This?
This traditional USA folk hymn is also included in The United Methodist Hymnal at no. 292. Neaveill has preserved the familiar melody, but he has given it a new harmonization. The setting's interesting tonality moves between Eb major and C minor, concluding on a quite unsettled Bb major chord.

Ryan D. Neaveill's photo, biography, contact information and links to additional songs and choral music are available on the Discipleship Ministries website.
