For This Young Woman's Selfless Gift
Alternate tune: Deo Gracia
Dedicated to the memory of Etty Hillesum (1914-1943) who died in the Holocaust
For this young woman's selfless gift
we now with thanks our voices lift.
We pledge anew to not forget
to live forever in her debt.A victim of her times' disease,
she changed her life's priorities
to savor every lovely thing
which fed her soul, made her heart sing.In dire conditions she still found
new strength from God to help surround
those now embittered by their fate
seek to endure their fragile state. She nurtured friends she left behind,
and through her notes for humankind
we have a treasure to sustain
us as we meet both grief and pain. With faith that helped her bear despair
she thanked her loved ones for their care.
She wrote while suffering total wrong:
"As we left camp we sang a song."
