Experts to Host Upper Room Call-in Event for Caregivers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. April 8, 2015 /Discipleship Ministries/ – Caregivers who know the joys and challenges of providing care for others will be able to engage in a conversation with two leading experts on caregiving during a live call-in seminar hosted by Upper Room Ministries, a unit of Discipleship Ministries of The United Methodist Church, and the Henri Nouwen Society.

The event, “Caregiving from the Heart: A Spirituality of Caregiving,” is for all caregivers, both professional and personal, and will be Thursday, April 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. (CDT).

Dr. Gordon Peerman and the Rev. Marjorie Thompson will discuss their own experiences with caregiving, Henri Nouwen's writing and Nouwen’s life-giving perspective on offering and receiving care. They also will answer questions from participants.

Peerman, an Episcopal priest, psychotherapist and mindfulness teacher, is the author of Blessed Relief: What Christians Can Learn from Buddhists about Suffering. He founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Programs at St. Thomas Health Services and Vanderbilt's Center for Integrative Health in Nashville.

Thompson, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), is a retreat leader, teacher and writer in the area of Christian spiritual formation. She served for 12 years as director of Pathways in Congregational Spirituality at Upper Room Ministries and is the author of Soul Feast: An Invitation to the Christian Spiritual Life and Family, the Forming Center.
